In the first few months of 2023, we have witnessed two conflicts of different regions, different nature, but equally distressing: the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Both conflicts have resulted in innocent casualties, property damage, humanitarian crises, and geopolitical tensions. Both of these conflicts have complex historical roots, multi-party interest demands, and contradictions and differences that are difficult to reconcile. Both conflicts require us to reflect on the meaning, values and means of peace.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine is a conflict involving the complex interaction between political, economic and military forces, and the change of any one factor may lead to new developments. The conflict stems from a number of issues, including differences between pro-Western and pro-Russia political factions, a dispute over the Crimea region in southern Ukraine, and separatism in eastern Ukraine. This conflict has not only affected the relations between Russia and Ukraine, but also affected the attention and intervention of Western countries and organizations such as the European Union, the United States and NATO. This is a game involving major issues such as the European security order, strategic interests in the Black Sea region, national sovereignty, and self-determination.
The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is a conflict involving religion, ethnicity, cultural identity and other deep-seated factors, and both sides have a certain degree of international support and intervention. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is primarily a long-standing rivalry between Palestinians and Israelis, and its origins date back to the early part of the last century, when Britain pledged to support the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine, while also recognizing Arab rights. In 1948, Israel declared its independence, triggering the first Middle East War and displacing a large number of Palestinians. Since then, the two families have experienced many wars and violent conflicts. The main points of contention in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are:
- The status of Jerusalem (the biggest issue on the surface)
- Legitimacy of Jewish settlements
- The return of Palestine refugees
- Establishment of the Palestinian State
Both of these conflicts have brought great suffering and trauma to the local people, and have also posed serious challenges to world peace. How should we view these two conflicts? How should we speak and act for peace?
First of all, we should respect facts, analyze rationally, and not be swayed by prejudices and emotions. We should understand the historical background and reality of these two conflicts, the positions and demands of relevant stakeholders, as well as the possible impact and consequences. We should avoid simply seeing one side as just and the other as evil, or one side as the victim and the other as the aggressor. We should recognize that both conflicts involve fundamental human rights, dignity and security, and that neither side can completely deny or ignore the existence and needs of the other. We should respect the legitimate rights and interests of each party, and at the same time require each party to shoulder its corresponding responsibilities.
Second, we should advocate dialogue, promote communication, and constantly seek consensus and compromise. We should be aware that neither of these conflicts can be resolved through unilateral force or pressure, and that an agreement for lasting peace is possible only through equal, good-faith and constructive dialogue and negotiations. We should support the international community and relevant organizations in playing a positive role in mediation and good offices, and at the same time respect the sovereignty and independence of the parties concerned. We should encourage the two sides to increase people-to-people exchanges and cooperation, enhance mutual understanding and trust, and eliminate hostility and prejudice.

Finally, we should act in support of peace and keep reducing violence and hatred. We should call on all parties involved in the conflict to refrain from the use or threat of use of force to avoid further loss of life and a humanitarian crisis. We should provide humanitarian assistance and psychological support to the people affected by the conflict to help them resume their normal lives. We should teach the next generation to cherish peace, respect differences and embrace a diverse world, and not repeat the mistakes of history.
In short, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict are both serious challenges facing the world today and important topics for us to pursue world peace. We cannot turn a blind eye to or be indifferent to these two conflicts, nor can we adopt a biased or extreme attitude towards them. We should contribute our share to the peaceful settlement of these two conflicts in a rational, objective, just and inclusive spirit. Let's call for peace and make the world a better place!
